Final Exam: IB English 2019

Updated: May 16, 2019

The IB English team has decided it is most beneficial for you to sit a "mock exam" for Paper II as your final exam for the course (20% of grade).

REMEMBER:

the point of a final assessment is to SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW (the IB prides itself on that approach, rather than developing assessments that highlight what you don't know)

WHEN?

This will take place the last class day, Tuesday, May 21.

If you have conflicts and cannot make it please arrange to make it up before Friday, May 24. You will have the entire period for the exam.

WHAT?

You will be asked to choose 1 of 3 essay prompts (these are general and could apply to any literary work of prose). The focus will be Kokoro and Perfume only. All 3 questions ask you to draw on your experience with two works.

HOW?

This is purely hand-written on special paper / form provided by the IB. It is exactly like the exams you will take next year. Carefully review this IB rubric as well. It is not open-note/resource, but rather purely from your own knowledge.

That being said, you are not expected to include a plethora of quotations BUT are encouraged to memorize a few key ones that might serve you well. Mrs. H says that the best papers include 1-2 quotations that also highlight literary aspects such as alliteration, metaphor, or imagery.

Mrs. Hanthorn's classes have compiled a list of TIPS:

There is also a SAMPLE PAPER pdf located in your "written assignment resources" folder where you can see all the literary devices, etc. in bold.

HOW TO STUDY?

You will already be deeply involved with whatever work you chose for the Written Assignment. The best idea is to review all the comments on our collaborative Padlet and your personal notes. Feel free to take photos of the posters we made and review those as well.
