Bildungsroman and Playlist for Grenouille

You just worked with a group to think metaphorically about Grenouille's life events.

Perfume is considered a bildungsroman. What's that?

The Oxford Companion to Literature defines it thusly:

"a German term for eduction novel (education being understood in a broad sense that includes self-formation or personal development), thus a significant sub-genre of novel which relates the experiences of a youthful protagonist in meeting the challenges of adolescence and early adulthood. Such works are also known as 'coming-of-age' novels, typically developing themes of innocence, self-knowledge, sexual awakening, and vocation"

To what extent is this true for Perfume?

In class exercise: create a metaphorical playlist for Grenouille's life.

Here's mine:

"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" - Smiths (lyrics)

"Psychokiller"- Talking Heads (lyrics)

"Personal Jesus"- Depeche Mode (lyrics)
