WWI Poetry Part 3: The Master Poems

Use this document as we unpack the meaning of these iconic poems and explore the vocabulary. This is your LAST daily assignment that will be graded - due Friday, Dec. 14 (nothing accepted after that, sorry).

Make a copy of this Google Doc so you can take notes, etc.

Challenge 1: Paraphrasing

With a partner, examine two of the poems. Paraphrase each poem, replacing various words with your own, creating a more clear, simplified version.

Reword them so they are now a prose (non-poetic) statement but express the same meaning. Your paraphrase may end up being shorter, the same length or even a bit longer.

Challenge 2: Vocabulary

There are already some words highlighted in BLUE with definitions provided at the end of the poem. Go through and highlight OTHER words and expressions you are unsure of (everyone will have a varying number). Then, find out the meaning using an online dictionary. Write the definition as a "comment" using the "highlight....comment" feature in Google docs.

3 part Vocab Task

Choose one of the BLUE vocabulary terms (these will be featured on the final) and find a GIF that matches the sentiment (this will work best for adjectives). Place the gif on this collaborative digital space https://padlet.com/amyburvall/wwipoetryvocab with the word as the caption.

Write a tongue twister using one of the other words (nouns will most likely work best). Use alliteration of course. Post to the same padlet space.

Vocab Game: chance to erase your lowest score in the course

Access this game after reviewing the vocabulary. https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/5c0c5d8d03a9b7001b7cb200

Take the "solo game" and screen shot your first score. Take as many times as you like and send me a screen shot of your first and your highest score. If you do this by Friday, Dec. 14 your lowest course grade will be dropped.

Challenge 3: Compare and Contrast

Make a chart (this could be drawn as a Venn diagram or simply a T chart with "Similar" and "Different" as titles.

Compare and contrast two different poems by 2 different authors (It might be interesting to use one of the female author's poems for this). Examine both the meaning of the poem (the content), and the structure (form), such as the use of poetic devices.

Try to find at least 3 things that are similar and 3 distinctly different things.
