Paul Nash served in WWI and became a war artist in both world wars before suffering nervous breakdown. This oil painting was completed at the end of the war (1918).
What do you see / notice?
What questions does this work spark?
Nash named this "We Are Making a New World".
How might the title change your interpretation? Would you have titled it differently? Explain.
This art historian suggests that the artist was perhaps NOT being sarcastic / ironic and instead of referring to humans "making a new world" through war, that perhaps it's nature talking ....that nature will ultimately triumph over man's destruction.
Do you agree? Explain.
